Sliders: Earth 214

6.9 | First Sight

Note: Original Quinn will be Quinn, and PTSS Quinn will be Quinn-1 from now on.

The vortex opened, and Quinn, Arturo, and Quinn-1 flew from it. The vortex began to fluctuate as Maggie came out. It closed behind her, leaving Diana and Rembrandt's whereabouts in question.

QUINN
No! What happened?

QUINN-1
It might have been the extra people we're carrying. This was never designed to hold seven people...

Seconds later, the vortex reopened five feet from its original location. Diana flew out, followed by Rembrandt. The vortex suddenly closed behind them.

QUINN-1
Wade!

A couple seconds later, the vortex struggled to open, but this time, it opened in the middle of an intersection. Wade tumbled out, stood up, but had trouble walking. She had turned her ankle, and struggled to get out of the middle of the street. As she reached the edge of the street, she collapsed.

Quinn-1, Rembrandt, and Arturo ran to aid her, but a policeman stepped in front of them.

POLICEMAN
Where do you all think you're going?

REMBRANDT
We're going to help our friend.

POLICEMAN
The laws haven't changed, buddy. The ambulance is coming. Let's leave the healing to the doctors.

Rembrandt was worried. This world was strange. But Wade was hurt, and she needed medical attention.

The ambulance arrived, and a couple medics picked Wade up, and placed her inside it. Quinn-1 motioned to get inside with her, but was stopped by the policeman.

POLICEMAN
Where you going, man?

QUINN-1
I'm going with my friend.

The policeman was visibly agitated. He didn't like Quinn's attitude. He pulled out his gun.

POLICEMAN
Step out of the ambulance or I will fire!

Arturo pulled Quinn-1 from the ambulance, and it sped away.

Quinn-1 hailed a taxi, and told the man to follow the ambulance.

REMBRANDT
Where are you going, Q-Ball?

QUINN-1
I'll meet you at the hotel.

Rembrandt, Arturo, Quinn, Diana, and Maggie walked towards the hotel.

ARTURO
Just as soon as you get home, Dr. Davis, we will leave this godforsaken city. It isn't worth the land it was built on.

DIANA
Hey, at least it's nice and clean. Plenty of trees; no smog...

QUINN
What about Diana's timer?

DIANA
Well, I was hoping that I could allow it to rest and perfect it before I used it again. But if it's too dangerous for me to come along, then I'll use it.

REMBRANDT
Stay a while.

Rembrandt didn't want her to leave. Farewells had never been her strong suit. Diana wasn't ready to leave her friend either. She still wasn't over Mallory's death, and needed the support.

DIANA
I'll wait for a day or two, Remmy.

Remmy felt better, but still didn't want to see her go. But his attention soon turned to home.

REMBRANDT
So we're going straight home now?

ARTURO
No, Rembrandt. We have to stop by at Quinn's homeworld and pick up the co-ordinates for Earth Prime.

QUINN
You found Kromagg Prime?

Arturo was puzzled. Rembrandt tried to help.

REMBRANDT
Long story Professor. No, Quinn, Earth. You're not from Kromagg Prime. I think.... I don't know anymore.

QUINN
That's good to hear, but I'll still need proof. But what about the Kromaggs on Earth Prime?

REMBRANDT
According to the professor, Earth Prime is safe.

ARTURO
And more good news. I believe, with Quinn's help, that we can protect Earth Prime from a Kromagg attack.

Quinn was a little worried. Arturo had taken to the other Quinn. He hoped their relationship would improve. He was a little jealous.

Maggie, sitting in the corner, approached Quinn. She had a question for him, and she thought that it was a good time to ask it.

MAGGIE
Quinn. What was it like inside Mallory?

QUINN
For a while, it was like watching a movie. I watched life as he lived it. I was able to take over for a while at first, but making myself heard got harder and harder. Then, it was like I blacked out every once and a while.

Rembrandt was aware of the conversation, and he jumped in.

REMBRANDT
That must have been tough, Q-Ball.

QUINN
It was real hard, but it gave me time to think... about the way I've lived the last couple years. I wish I had a chance to start over.

Quinn-1 arrived at the hospital, and the door was locked. A security guard came to the door.

GUARD
What is it son?

QUINN-1
I just want to see my friend. Is it not visiting hours?

GUARD
Visiting hours?!

Quinn-1 was discouraged. He obviously wasn't allowed in the hospital. He would have to find another way in.

The phone rang in the hotel room. It was the hospital. Wade would be released in the next couple days. Rembrandt checked the timer. This one, as usual, would be close.

Quinn-1 wandered crestfallen throughout the streets. Wade may not be released in time, his hours with the professor were numbered, and the whole trip hadn't quite gone as he'd hoped. Then, his attention turned to Wade. How could he get inside the hospital? One thing kept playing through his mind. When the medics showed up, they simply picked Wade up and took her to the hospital. They didn't stop to check her condition.

Then it came to him. An idea. He waved down a taxi and put it into effect.

Back at the hotel, Arturo was on the computer. He was connected to the internet, hoping to find a way to free Wade from the hospital.

ARTURO
Hmm. I'm starting to understand why this world refuses to allow visitors inside the various medical facilities. Back during the Civil War, many civilians were hired to act as doctors. Because of the terrible conditions, many soldiers lost limbs and some died. The doctors blamed this on the civilians, rather than the conditions and a schism began to form. Eventually, medical training was made more and more rigorous, so only the best could treat the sick. Then, paranoia began to add to the elitism, and no civilians were even allowed to enter hospitals. Paranoia is a terrible thing. The government can't even touch the medical community. It's unbelievable!

QUINN
Alternate Earths, Professor.

REMBRANDT
Man, how I long for the days when our biggest recurring problem was the food...

Arturo looked at Quinn. The procedure separated the Quinns, but Mallory's face had survived with Quinn. It had shaken Quinn, but was a small price to pay to be in control of his own actions again.

Diana entered the room.

DIANA
I think I'd better be leaving.

Rembrandt was sad. He didn't want her to leave, but he knew she had to.

REMBRANDT
Take care, Diana.

DIANA
I will.

Diana looked at everyone.

DIANA
You'll have my home co-ordinates. You can always visit. My Earth is your Earth.

Everyone laughed at Diana's corny joke. Rembrandt laughed to cover up his sadness. It was a bittersweet moment. Diana hugged everyone.

MAGGIE
I'll miss you, Diana.

DIANA
You have Wade as a friend now.

Maggie knew this wasn't true. Wade would be going home, but she didn't want to contradict Diana.

Diana activated her timer and jumped inside the vortex. As it closed, the hotel phone rang. Rembrandt picked it up.

REMBRANDT
Hello?

WOMAN
Mr. Brown. Sorry to upset your life again, but I have some bad news.

Remmy sighed. How long would Wade be? He couldn't take any more of a waiting period.

WOMAN
Mr. Brown. Your friend, Quinn Mallory. He's dead. He was hit by a car, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rembrandt couldn't believe it. Q-Ball was dead. It couldn't be true.

REMBRANDT
I think you've made a mistake.

WOMAN
I'm sorry, Mr. Brown.

Rembrandt hung up the phone and told the others.

ARTURO
He was quite disturbed by Mallory's death. He felt it was his fault for not waiting to use the equipment on his world.

QUINN
It was a good hypothesis. I would have done the same thing.

ARTURO
I know, my boy. I think Wade's condition pushed him over the edge.

MAGGIE
You think it was a suicide?

ARTURO
I don't think Quinn would do that, but maybe he was acting careless. I will miss him.

REMBRANDT
The woman on the phone said that they would release the body before next Tuesday. We won't even get to give Q-Ball a proper burial.

ARTURO
He will get a memorial service from us.

Inside the hospital, Quinn-1 was on top of a table. The doctors were waiting to do the autopsy, and they didn't feel a need to place him in the morgue yet.

Quinn's plan went into stage two as he lifted himself up.

MAGGIE
What are we going to do now?

ARTURO
We have to wait for Ms. Welles. We can't leave her here if we don't have to.

Rembrandt looked at the clock on the wall. Even though it was early, it had been a long, hard day. He wanted it to end.

REMBRANDT
I'm going to sleep.

ARTURO
I think we all should get some rest. We'll work on Quinn's memorial in the morning.

Everyone retreated to their bedrooms, but Quinn stayed in the living room. He was thinking about the last few days. He thought of the way he acted a couple years ago. The time inside Mallory gave him time to think... all too much time. He was going to be a better person. He didn't worry though. He would be home soon.

Quinn was glad he wouldn't have to be the full leader. Now that the Professor was back with them, they would share that responsibility. He stared at Los Angeles. He wouldn't mind being back home in San Francisco, either.

Quinn-1 looked around the room. He knew his plan would work. He had to get one of them to work. It was a pleasant change of pace. He slipped out of the room, but only saw people in white coats. He would definitely be caught if he was seen in his civilian clothes. He hadn't factored this in. Maybe this wouldn't be as easy as he thought.

A doctor entered the room. Even though Quinn-1 didn't have to use force much on this trip, he would have to now. He hit the doctor, knocking him out. He then put on his coat and exited the room.

Quinn-1 walked to the receptionist's desk. Even she was wearing a doctor's coat, possibly an intern. She looked at him and began to stare. This made Quinn-1 nervous. He didn't want to cause any commotion.

WOMAN
Doctor, have I seen you before?

QUINN-1
No, I don't think so. Were you at the doctors' ball last year?

Quinn-1 laughed at his lame question, but that's all he could think of. Her strange look caused him to retract his question.

QUINN-1
There's a patient, Wade Welles. Where is she located?

WOMAN
Room 262. Are you sure we haven't met?

QUINN-1
Pretty sure.

Quinn sauntered over to the elevator, all set to find Wade.

Arturo, Quinn, Maggie, and Rembrandt were standing in the hotel room, having no other place to perform the memorial.

ARTURO
You were a good man. I didn't always agree with your attitude, but you were as good a student as you could have been. You saved me, my boy, and I'll never forget that.

Rembrandt was the only other one to know Quinn-1. He sang a heartrending 'Amazing Grace,' and then said a few words.

REMBRANDT
Q-Ball, what can I say? I love you man. You've reunited me with my friends, and you've given me a way home. I hope you find peace. I know you will.

There was a period of silence for the lost slider.

Quinn-1 knocked on the hospital room and then entered. Wade was sitting up in her hospital bed, a little dazed.

QUINN-1
Wade?

WADE
Quinn!

Quinn-1 rushed over to Wade and hugged her. It was a toss-up as to who was more relieved to find the other. They stared at each other for a second, and Quinn-1 moved towards her. They shared a kiss, but were interrupted by a buzz in the room.

QUINN-1
We've got to go. Are you all right?

Wade was still a little dazed from the injury... and from the kiss. This is why she had come. Things were looking up for them. She nodded, and Quinn picked her up out of bed.

Back in the hotel room, the sliders were debating the situation.

ARTURO
I understand that we need to wait for Ms. Welles, but we also need to travel to San Francisco. That's where Quinn's lab is.

REMBRANDT
Couldn't we just travel after we slide?

ARTURO
It's a possibility, but we should get to the lab as soon as possible. Ms. Welles should have enough time to get to San Francisco if she is released in time. We will leave a note in the room, advising her of the situation.

Quinn interjected into the conversation.

QUINN
You'll have a geographic stabilizer?

ARTURO
Quinn, my boy, we have solved a sliding mystery. The sliding radius can be moved.

Quinn was happy to hear about this. It was something he wouldn't have to worry about.

Quinn-1 and Wade escaped to the lobby of the hospital and left through the back door. Simultaneously, a group of "policemen" were storming through the front door.

Quinn-1 waved down a cab, and was amazed to see that it was Pavel, the same cab driver who had helped him with his plan.

PAVEL
Good to see you again.

QUINN-1
You too, man!

The cab was followed by a van that read "Medical Police". Quinn-1 couldn't believe that the medical community had their own police force. The taxi passed by the hotel, and Quinn-1 saw the others.

QUINN-1
Guys!

The sliders saw Quinn-1 and quickly jumped inside the cab. The van was close behind them, as Pavel continued to drive, avoiding them.

REMBRANDT
Q-Ball!!

ARTURO
Good heavens, you're alive! What happened?!

QUINN-1
I'll explain later.

Wade rested with Quinn-1, but Quinn-1 was worried. They weren't out of the woods yet.

ARTURO
My good man, can you lose them?

PAVEL
Can eggs fry?

Pavel screeched the cab through an alley and high-tailed it to the highway.

PAVEL
Where to?

ARTURO
San Francisco.

PAVEL
San Francisco? I used to live in San Francisco, before my son got married.

On the way to San Francisco, Quinn-1 was finally able to explain how he had escaped.

QUINN-1
And that's when I got the idea. I noticed that the medics didn't even look at Wade when they picked her up. So I assumed the only way to get inside was to "die". So I hired this good man, and he helped me. The medics didn't even check my pulse.

ARTURO
HA HA!!! So much for them being the most qualified practitioners in the multiverse...

REMBRANDT
Man, we thought you were dead. We had a memorial service and everything!

QUINN-1
Sorry about that, guys, but I hope my memorial was nice.

Rembrandt laughed. This was a much better day.

REMBRANDT
It was beautiful! You shoulda heard me sing!

The sliders arrived in San Francisco with a little over 5 hours on the timer.

ARTURO
It's good to be home!

All the sliders released themselves from the cramped cab. They'd had to sit four in the back, with Arturo and Wade in the front seat.

PAVEL
Okay, that will be $256.63.

Rembrandt thought he was joking, but the sliders checked their pockets. They weren't even close.

REMBRANDT
Can you drive me by an ATM?

The sliders laughed. They were glad. They were all going home.

Arturo and Quinn-1 decided to let the timer rest. Quinn still wasn't very knowledgeable as to the workings of the new timer, but he was learning. He didn't feel quite as left out anymore.

When the timer reached zero, Quinn-1 opened the vortex. He looked at Wade.

QUINN-1
Are you ready to go home?

WADE
I'm just glad to get out of that damn cab!

Wade looked at Quinn-1. This was only the beginning of their relationship.

Wade, Maggie, Remmy, Arturo, and Quinn-1 jumped into the vortex. Quinn looked around. It was good to be sliding again. He dove into the vortex, and it closed behind him.
