Sliders: Earth 214

6.16 | Power Failure

Rembrandt was trying to think straight, but it was hard. There was a lot of hope when he started this journey. Things had been looking up, but had headed downhill hard ever since the separation of Mallory. He had died, Diana had left, Quinn had left, Maggie had died. And the timer was not in its once perfect state. In fact, just that morning, it had taken a serious fall that everyone feared had destroyed it. While the machine was fine upon examination, Rembrandt was worried nonetheless.

He and Wade had been trying to keep morale up, but Rembrandt had run out of happy thoughts. It was time to meditate on the past, and grieve for his lost friends. Remmy couldn't take another loss.

QUINN
5, 4, 3, 2, 1....

Quinn activated the vortex, which swelled to solidity but then started changing colors. It rapidly shifted from a blue color to more of a transparent shade. Quinn looked worried. This hadn't happened before, and he hadn't seen a clear vortex in a long time. He looked at the Professor. Arturo had seen it, but felt no reason to panic. They would simply check the timer on the next world.

Quinn leaped inside, followed by Rembrandt and Arturo. Immediately after Arturo entered the vortex, it began to degrade slowly. Wade quickly jumped inside, but she was hit with a sort of barrier.

On the other side, the first three sliders emerged, but a lifeless body followed them. Wade's body hit the ground hard, and Rembrandt, Arturo, and Quinn feared the worst. Quinn ran, and took her pulse. He looked up, right at Arturo, and he shook his head. Rembrandt and Arturo's heads dropped. Arturo knew that they had lost another slider.

Rembrandt refused to believe it. She couldn't be dead.

REMBRANDT
No!

QUINN
Remmy, I'm sorry. I know you and Wade were close.

Rembrandt wouldn't accept it. She wasn't dead.

REMBRANDT
I can't believe this!

ARTURO
I know, Rembrandt. I can't believe we lost her.

Arturo was hurt by this. He had promised Quinn that he would protect Wade. He promised himself that he would investigate the reason for her death.

ARTURO
Quinn, we have to find out how she died.

QUINN
We will, Professor. But we can't here. We've only got half an hour on this world.

Rembrandt was laying over Wade. She wasn't dead. Then he saw it. Just for a second, but he was sure that he saw it. Wade moved. He picked her up, and began to walk.

QUINN
Remmy, where are you going?

REMBRANDT
She moved, guys! We've got to get her to a hospital!

Rembrandt looked at Quinn. Quinn almost objected, but Remmy's eyes had such passion in saving Wade. He let him go.

QUINN
We'll meet you there in a couple minutes.

Rembrandt ran and waved down a cab. They rushed to the nearest hospital.

QUINN
This is futile, Professor.

ARTURO
I know, but he feels strongly about it. And I hope he's right.

QUINN
I know, Professor. I do too.

Oddly, the timer never came up in the conversation. The sight of Wade's lifeless body had changed everything.

Quinn and Arturo met Rembrandt at the hospital. There was no good news.

REMBRANDT
They're wrong. Their equipment is wrong.

QUINN
Remmy...

REMBRANDT
Q-Ball..... I saw her move! She's alive!

ARTURO
Mr. Brown. Maybe you just wanted to believe so intently that you saw her move. I know you want her to be alive, but all of the evidence points to her death. You will feel better as soon as we leave. Then, we can all begin the grieving process.

REMBRANDT
Professor, you know that different worlds could have different medical procedures and equipment! They could be wrong! She could just be in a coma! And I can't believe that you all are so casual about this! You'd better wish she was alive because you sure as Hell don't seem to care if she's dead!

ARTURO
Mr. Brown. I don't want to get into this now. It is time to slide.

REMBRANDT
Without Wade? We don't even know what the hell happened to her in there!

Quinn approached Rembrandt and patted him on the back.

QUINN
Look, Remmy. We've been through a lot in the last few months. And in the last few years. I personally die a little bit each time we lose a family member, but it's happened so many times that it's almost desensitizing. I know that sounds horrible, but that's how it is. We'll grieve for Wade. We'll have a vigil on the next world. We always do. But now, we have to leave.

Rembrandt put his face in his hands and slouched down in the corner. For a second, he sat there motionless before he got up and moved towards the bed.

Arturo looked at Quinn, who showed him the timer. It was time.

ARTURO
Let's go, Mr. Brown.

Quinn activated the timer. There was no color changing this time, but the vortex remained in its transparent state. He looked at Rembrandt, who was still looking down at Wade on the bed. The doctors were wrong. Rembrandt knew they were.

Arturo jumped inside.

QUINN
Rembrandt, let her go!

REMBRANDT
Okay...

Quinn jumped inside the vortex. Rembrandt couldn't do it. He picked Wade up and threw her inside the vortex. Maybe the next world's doctors could help her. Then, it happened again. The vortex began to destabilize. Rembrandt ran and jumped inside, only to be hit with the same barrier...

On the next world, Quinn and Arturo landed, but they were surprised to see Wade fly out -- and perfectly rejuvenated, no less. Rembrandt, on the other hand, emerged in the same condition as Wade had the time before.

WADE
Remmy!

ARTURO
Miss Welles! What happened?

WADE
I don't know, Professor. It was really strange. It was like an out of body experience, but I don't remember very much. What happened to Remmy?

QUINN
We don't know, but we have to find out! We have a little over a day here.

Quinn and Arturo began working at the hotel, while Wade looked over Remmy.

QUINN
Now, Professor, I don't think the problem lies in the timer. I've taken it apart, and there doesn't seem to be a problem with it.

ARTURO
I don't know if that's true, Quinn. This timer has been through quite a bit. It's been reset, and it has experienced more trauma than it was ever designed to take.

QUINN
You think this was caused by physical trauma, Professor? Come on, we dropped the old timer thousands of times, just like this morning, and we never fell into comas. There has to be more to it, Professor.

ARTURO
Quinn, this timer is not indestructible. A hit to any one of a number of components could total it. I'm not saying it is the cause, but if anything this morning's damage could have been the catalyst.

Quinn thought for a second. If this timer was in trouble, what about other possibilities?

QUINN
What about Laze's timer?

ARTURO
We left it with the resistance. They needed it more than we did.

Quinn looked annoyed. If they had kept that timer, they would have been safe.

ARTURO
Quinn, it wasn't as good a timer as we have now.

Quinn knew this. He just didn't understand the current timer as well as he wished.

ARTURO
Okay, let's think about this rationally. It had a lot of trouble holding seven, and we had complications there.

QUINN
But it's done fine holding five for a while, until we lost Maggie.

The memory of Caitlin was completely gone, now.

ARTURO
This might be one of the consequences of changing the radius.

QUINN
I still don't understand that, Professor. The radius is simply a landing zone, how did you change it?

ARTURO
I didn't. It was only a hypothesis. I believe that the timer couldn't carry us the extra distance, so it set itself a new radius. Now, I believe that we should focus on the task at hand. Each slide at this point is a risk, and I have my doubts about things not getting worse.

QUINN
I was thinking about that, Professor. I want you to leave me here. After we finish, test the timer, and come back for me if it works.

ARTURO
Quinn...

QUINN
No, Professor. The fourth slider is going into a coma every time. I don't want to risk anyone else.

Wade had entered the room a little earlier. She looked at the two men.

ARTURO
We're not leaving you, Quinn. What if the next slide takes a month or two? Or even a year?

QUINN
Then I'll get a job.

ARTURO
No, Quinn.

QUINN
Then I'm going to be the last one in!

Wade interrupted Quinn. She wasn't going to allow this.

WADE
No, Quinn. I will! It's already happened to me, and both of you need to work on the timer.

ARTURO
That's impossible, Miss Welles. We have no idea what the consequences are if this happens twice. We can't even be sure that Rembrandt will recuperate from this.

QUINN
Yeah, I'm going to do it. Even if it happens to me, I'll see if I can remember anything about the experience.

Arturo didn't feel the need to argue. He was tired, anyway.

At the time of the slide, Quinn activated the timer. Wade jumped inside first. Arturo and Quinn threw Rembrandt inside, and Arturo hesitated.

ARTURO
You go, Quinn!

QUINN
No, Professor.

ARTURO
Go! Now!

Quinn shook his head, and he pushed Arturo inside the vortex. Then, he saw the vortex destabilize. Oh, no, Quinn thought. He jumped inside.

On the next world, Wade looked at Rembrandt, awake now. She was relieved he was all right. Arturo came out next, followed by Quinn's lifeless body. Arturo ran to Quinn. He was angered at Quinn.

ARTURO
Damn you, boy. I'll find a solution. I promise.

Rembrandt and Arturo carried Quinn to the hotel. This world, unlike the others, didn't seem to care that Quinn was hurt. A nearby billboard identified this region of the city as "Fiscal Zone H," which was not authorized for "military or medical interventions" until October.

WADE
Oh, this is paradise.

Rembrandt laughed at Wade's sarcastic comment as much as he could, but he was struggling with his memory. This feeling reminded him of something, but what was it?

REMBRANDT
Yeah...

Remmy was happy to see Wade. Of course, he was also happy to be alive.

In the hotel room, Arturo was focusing on the timer. Rembrandt and Wade tried to help him. Arturo wasn't getting anywhere with the timer. He threw it down in disgust.

ARTURO
Damn it! I don't understand what's wrong!

REMBRANDT
Its okay, Professor. We'll find a solution.

ARTURO
And how am I supposed to do that when none of this makes any sense?!

REMBRANDT
Well, Wade and I have seen what happens to the gateway after three people slide...

Arturo thought this could lead to an answer.

ARTURO
Yes! What happened?

REMBRANDT
Well, it got smaller, and it was harder to jump inside. As though it was trying to repel us instead of suck us through. That's when it all went black.

Arturo rubbed at his forehead.

ARTURO
All right, I have a hypothesis. We know that the timer is essentially ripping a hole in between dimensions. We know that the vortex has changed colors recently, and that the comas started immediately after that change occurred. The present color is identical to that of the vortex that Quinn's original timer created. Quinn and I had a hypothesis a while back that the color of the vortex was determined by its power level.

REMBRANDT
So, you're saying that-

ARTURO
Yes, Mr. Brown! The vortex is decreasing in energy. Now, we know that the timer can hold the vortex stable for one minute on full power, but it is too weak to open the vortex at any time. We have to wait for the right window.

REMBRANDT
Okay...

ARTURO
But what if the timer has now become so weak that it can only maintain a wormhole for 30 or 40 seconds? After that time, the universe begins to mend itself.

WADE
But I thought this had to do with the fourth Slider through...

ARTURO
It seems that is a coincidence, Ms. Welles. So, it is my opinion that after that 30 to 40 seconds, the hole begins to seal and that is the barrier that you, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Mallory have hit.

WADE
So, how do we fix it?

ARTURO
That, Miss Welles, I do not know. I suppose we would have to build an attachment to feed the timer additional energy when it comes time to slide. I wouldn't know how to begin to create a device like that.

Wade and Remmy didn't want to give up, but there didn't seem to be any answers. The Professor was tired, and he decided to go for a walk.

Twenty minutes from the hotel, driven haggard by the stress of the situation and his recent neglect of his health, Arturo collapsed on the sidewalk...

He woke up in a hospital cot. He looked at the file to his side. It explained that he was experiencing a lack of sleep, exhaustion, and mild dehydration. Unbeknownst to the professor, he was lucky enough to have collapsed on the edge of Fiscal Zone G, which had been assigned over half of the city's medical resources due to its widely acclaimed cost-cutting measures.

He had to admit to feeling better now. He looked across the hall and observed some laser eye surgery.

DOCTOR
I need more power! Tune the amplifier to six and a half!

A nurse adjusted a dial, and the laser intensified in brightness. Arturo was amazed. This was the solution. Was he dreaming, or was this just fantastic luck? He saw a similar laser in the corner of his own room. He then put his plan into action.

At the hotel, Wade and Rembrandt were discussing their experiences, hoping to piece together a puzzle.

WADE
I can't explain it, Remmy. It was like a dream, but it was so real.

REMBRANDT
I know what you mean. But did you notice about your energy?

WADE
Yeah! I was starving before the slide, but when I was in that coma, I didn't feel the need to eat or sleep at all. It was like I was completely refreshed and rejuvenated!

This triggered a thought in Rembrandt's mind. Diana had once spoken of an altered state where no one needed to eat or sleep. Maybe that's what was going on? He had to discuss this with Quinn and the Professor, but Quinn was in his coma and Arturo hadn't returned from his walk.

Arturo returned to the hotel the next day.

WADE
Professor!

REMBRANDT
Where were you?!

WADE
Yeah, we were worried sick!

ARTURO
I was feeling weak, and, ah, received treatment at a hospital. While I was there, I think I may have found the solution to our problem. On this world, there is a laser amplifier in use by the medical community. Now, during my stay, I managed to borrow one of them.

WADE
Professor! You stole?

ARTURO
Borrowed, Miss Welles! And if I attach it to the timer, I believe the laser will have enough power to sustain our vortex for the full minute. Who knows, possibly even longer!

REMBRANDT
That's great!

Arturo immediately retreated to his room and attached the amplifier to the top of the timer. Then, he rewired the devices so that the amplifier would activate when the timer was triggered.

He came out of the room, and met Rembrandt and Wade, waiting patiently for him.

ARTURO
It's done!

REMBRANDT
All right.

When the time of the slide came, everyone was nervous. Quinn was still in his "coma", and the others wondered whether the new adjustments would affect whether Quinn would be woken on the next world. Arturo opened the vortex, and the amplifier immediately took effect.

Wade jumped inside, and Rembrandt and Arturo threw Quinn inside. Rembrandt followed, and Arturo waited for the vortex to destabilize. It didn't happen as Rembrandt had described it. Arturo hoped the procedure had worked. He checked his watch until he felt it was safe and leapt in.

On the next world, Wade emerged, followed by Quinn. Wade was happy to hear Quinn's scream as he emerged. Rembrandt followed, and Arturo came out, as awake as ever.

REMBRANDT
Yes, man! You're all right!

QUINN
We're okay?

ARTURO
Yes, Mr. Mallory, all is well once more

The sliders smiled, as they walked to the hotel.

QUINN
I think I know what happened with the comas. I felt exactly like I did on the astral plane, except that I remember practically nothing of what I did.

Rembrandt added what Diana had once told him about the "higher consciousness" that she had once experienced.

ARTURO
I think that it is all becoming clear. The degraded, partial vortex separated your consciousness, your 'astral self' for want of a better term, from your body. Just as that incident with the lightning bolt Quinn mentioned shunted his entire self to that realm. In any event, a trip through a stabilized wormhole seems to be a surefire cure for the condition.

Arturo felt proud that he had solved the enigma, and that he had successfully kept his two promises intact.

A doctor rushes a man on a stretcher to a hospital room.

NURSE
It's all right, Mr. President, sit calm...

DOCTOR
Ms. Taylor, this is going to be very time-sensitive, so I need you at your post!

NURSE
Yes, Doctor.

DOCTOR
Starting the incision. It's working! I can see it, but I'm going to need the amplifier!

NURSE
Just say the word, Doctor. I'm ready.

The doctor continued to cut into the President's chest.

DOCTOR
Okay, on my mark. Three...two...one... Go!

The nurse pressed the button for the amplifier, but nothing happened.

DOCTOR
Nurse, now! We're losing him!

NURSE
It's not working, Doctor!

The nurse ran a quick self-diagnostic on the laser.

NURSE
Someone's removed the amplifier! We need to move him to another room!

DOCTOR
It's too late. He's gone...
