Sliders: Earth 214

6.13 | The Assignment, Part I

REMBRANDT
I'm not kidding, girl! They were crazy on that world!

WADE
Give it up, Remmy! It wasn't that exciting or even that interesting!

Rembrandt seemed kind of hurt by Wade's comment.

MAGGIE
Its all right Rem. We still love you.

Maggie felt strange. Her last seizure was the day before, and she hadn't felt the same way she did since she left Thomas's world. She assumed that her problem was over. She still hadn't told anyone, but Arturo knew something was wrong. He kept that to himself, though.

ARTURO
Everyone ready?

REMBRANDT
Do we have a choice?

QUINN
No, you don't Remmy!

Rembrandt laughed and jumped into the vortex. Quinn and Arturo followed. Maggie motioned to but she could feel it coming on. Wade hesitated, but she jumped inside. Maggie fell to the ground and began to shake.

MAGGIE
Wade...

Maggie blacked out as another vortex opened. The vortex in front of Maggie closed, as a figure dragged her away. The stranger's vortex closed shortly afterward.

On the other side, once again, only four sliders emerged. Quinn was obviously angered by this.

QUINN
Not again.

Rembrandt didn't like how Quinn was treating the situation.

REMBRANDT
Q-Ball...

QUINN No, Remmy. We can't keep backtracking! We should just carry her in next time!

ARTURO
I believe Miss Beckett needs to see a doctor.

REMBRANDT
Why is that, Professor?

ARTURO
I spoke with a physician at the hospital. He said that the people stricken by the shockwave were still unconscious. Now, because Maggie was from another Earth, her body recovered differently, but I believe the seizures she's been having are a direct result of her contact with the wave.

WADE
Why didn't the doctors think of that?

ARTURO
Oh, I'm sure they did, but the doctor told me that he couldn't explain the seizures, so he made no effort to treat them.

REMBRANDT
And I thought doctors on our world were lazy.

QUINN
It makes sense. And the stress of sliding only compounded the effects!

WADE
How long before we can get her?

ARTURO
Seven hours. We should locate the hotel and get some rest.

QUINN
Okay, let's get going.

Maggie woke, aware that she had suffered another seizure. She opened her eyes and saw that she was in some sort of laboratory. A woman noted that she had awakened and walked over to her.

WOMAN
Hi. We usually wouldn't turn this area into a hospital, but we made an exception for you.

Maggie looked at the woman.

MAGGIE
Who are you?

WOMAN
Quinn never told you about me? I'm Logan St. Clair.

MAGGIE
Logan St. Clair?

LOGAN
Yes. Now, I need you to do something for me.

MAGGIE
I don't think so.

LOGAN
Come on. You can't be angry at me! We have a common enemy!

MAGGIE
Who?

LOGAN
Humanity's enemy, the Kromaggs!

MAGGIE
You have the weapon?

LOGAN
Weapon? No, no, no. We have a beautifully engineered virus that's busy annihilating them.

Maggie thought for a while. Why did they need her? Deep down, she wanted to help, so she reluctantly agreed.

MAGGIE
What do you want me to do?

LOGAN
Good. We need you to be a "runner".

MAGGIE
Runner?

LOGAN
It's the name for someone that goes from world to world, spreading the Kromagg virus.

MAGGIE
Tell me more, first.

LOGAN
It's an airborne virus, constructed perfectly to attack Kromagg DNA. Humans carry it, and from the moment one exhales, it spreads over the world in a matter of days. When it enters the atmosphere, it reacts with some of the other molecules, and remains there forever. It causes death in a matter of minutes. As of now, I have twenty-five runners under my leadership.

Logan seemed very passionate about this. Maggie wondered why the group disliked her so much.

MAGGIE
Okay. Let's do this.

Maggie rose, and then stopped. She felt good. After the last seizure, she could barely walk. Now, she felt like a million dollars.

LOGAN
Feels good? Yeah, this may not be a hospital, but we've got some of the best doctors in the multiverse here.

MAGGIE
Let's get this virus ready.

Logan looked embarrassed.

LOGAN
Yeah. You see, it's already inside you. We assumed you'd agree. Everyone does.

Maggie felt unsure, but decided, in the words of her first commanding officer, to 'go with it.'

Quinn and the others were watching television, waiting for their chance to return and find Maggie.

REMBRANDT
I can't believe this. The Super Bowl is on!

QUINN
Now?

REMBRANDT
Yeah, I guess they play it early here.

QUINN
Who's playing?

REMBRANDT
Man! It's the Cowboys! And the Titans?

QUINN
Titans?

REMBRANDT
Yeah, the Tennessee Titans.

WADE
Tennessee has a football team?

QUINN
Different worlds, I guess.

Rembrandt turned up the volume on the television.

ANNOUNCER
And there it is! Randy Moss catches the pass from Aikman, and he's going the distance! The Cowboys get 9 more points and go up 39-25. Man, W. Bush must feel good that he drafted Moss.

ANNOUNCER #2
Yeah, and we haven't seen one trace of off-the-field problems. You know, that was the question surrounding Moss. The Cowboys took a gamble and it appears to be paying off...

ANNOUNCER
You said it!

REMBRANDT
Oh man! I hate the Cowboys!

QUINN
9-points for a touchdown? What's that about?

ANNOUNCER
We'll be back to finish the game up, after these messages.

QUINN
Hey, Remmy! Isn't that...? The announcer...I've heard him before!

REMBRANDT
Yeah! What's his name? The baseball guy!

WADE
Bob Costas...

Everyone turned around in astonishment at Wade.

WADE
What? I like baseball...

QUINN
On our world, he did the baseball and basketball games. I guess he does football here.

Quinn looked down at the timer. Just a little longer...

LOGAN
The world we're sending you to has some Kromagg activity on it, so you have to be careful. Ordinarily we'd send you alone, but a couple others and myself are joining you.

MAGGIE
Sounds good. So are you a carrier?

LOGAN
No... I'm just along for security purposes.

An officer brought Maggie an automatic rifle and some clothing. She got ready and met Logan in a large room.

LOGAN
Ready?

MAGGIE
As I'll ever be...

Logan activated a vortex and an orange vortex appeared.

LOGAN
Ordinarily, we don't use this type of timer, but I like it this way.

Maggie jumped inside, and Logan and her assistants dove inside the vortex. It closed behind them.

The four landed on a world consumed in war.

The four landed on the human side, just a few yards from where a Kromagg encampment lay.

LOGAN
Damn! There isn't supposed to be a resistance movement on this world!

MAGGIE
Why don't you want resistance movements?

Logan calmed down quickly.

LOGAN
They get in the way.

An atomizer hit the side of the trench. Three people dissolved to skeletons and faded into dust. This brought back bad memories from Maggie's past.

A colonel approached Logan.

COLONEL
Miss? I'm Colonel Lawrence Tate. Our movement is failing, and we were about to evacuate. Can we slide to wherever you're going?

LOGAN
Yes. We're going to a Running Center. Your men are welcome there.

MAGGIE
When do we leave?

Maggie exaggerated her breathing. But she began to feel light-headed. She thought that it might have been the breathing, but she knew it was another seizure coming.

MAGGIE
No!

Logan opened the vortex, and her assistants jumped inside. Logan saw Maggie shaking on the ground.

LOGAN
Well, you were lots of help.

She looked at the colonel, as the troops slid.

LOGAN
Give me your gun!

The colonel handed over his gun and jumped inside the vortex. Logan aimed at Maggie.

MAGGIE
No!

Logan prepared to fire at Maggie, but spotted an atomizer flying towards both her and Maggie. It was going to hit Logan if she didn't hurry. She dove into the vortex, as the atomizer hit the trench.

When Logan landed in the lab, Tate had a question for her.

TATE
Why did you shoot her?

Logan looked annoyed with how useless Maggie was. The colonel should have known that they couldn't leave a carrier for the Kromaggs to find.
Then again, they might not have been in contact with the organized rebellion. And even though she didn't actually shoot Maggie, Logan decided to play along.

LOGAN
She was in pain.

Logan walked to her office and laid down in her chair. She was tired. She was also waiting for some news. She knew what would happen if Maggie didn't slide.

Her intercom buzzed.

SECRETARY
Miss St. Clair?

Logan pressed the intercom button.

LOGAN
Yes?

SECRETARY
A vortex just opened on that world. It might be them.

LOGAN
Excellent.

Logan walked from her office. She grabbed four of her best men and took them to the large room.

She opened the vortex and the five leapt inside.

Quinn's vortex spiralled out to zero.

QUINN
So, she's not here. How long do we have to look?

Arturo glanced at the timer.

ARTURO
Not enough time. Only three minutes.

QUINN
That's just great.

Quinn's annoyance spread to the others. None of them wanted to slide back again. Quinn saw a orange vortex open. There was only one time he had seen that vortex. He knew who would emerge from it, and she would have some answers for him. He watched as four men emerged, followed by Logan St. Claire.

Rembrandt noticed the same thing, but he didn't realize until Logan emerged. He was surprised to see her. Arturo and Wade simply didn't know what was going on.

Logan looked annoyed. This wasn't Quinn. She turned around, prepared to activate the timer.

QUINN
Logan...

Logan turned around. That wasn't what she expected to hear.

LOGAN
Who are you?

QUINN
It's me, Quinn Mallory.

LOGAN
You're not Quinn.

Quinn was reminded of his appearance. He had gotten used to his new face and voice. He hadn't realized that no one would recognize him.

QUINN
Logan, it's me. Now what do you want?

Logan didn't believe what Quinn said. She wanted an explanation.

QUINN
Get home?

Logan got her answer. She was angry now.

LOGAN
Did you?

QUINN
Logan, where's Maggie?

LOGAN
Your friend? The Kromaggs killed her on a mission she helped me with...

This was terrible. Maggie was dead. This hit Remmy harder than the others. He loved Maggie. She hadn't fit in as well, except with Quinn and himself. Lately even Quinn was angry due to the delays her condition was causing. And now she was gone.

Rembrandt didn't trust Logan at all. The two doubles hated each other as well, but Logan needed Quinn. Her men surrounded the Sliders.

LOGAN
Come along, Quinn. I need your help.

QUINN
Can't, Logan. We're leaving in twenty seconds.

LOGAN
Then punch in these coordinates.

Quinn didn't trust Logan, but decided to help her. She might have some answers about the mysterious activity surrounding the Kromaggs. Quinn entered the coordinates to the world with Logan's lab, and both groups of sliders slid.

In Logan's office, Logan was explaining what happened to her.

LOGAN
That bullet came back and hit me. I landed on a world that was experiencing the Renaissance for the first time. I survived, barely, but I missed the slide. That world was all right if you stayed away from rats. A month later, the Kromaggs came and sent me to a breeding camp. Trust me, Quinn. I hated you for the longest time, but then, the camp was attacked by humans. I was released on this world, and a scientist asked for my help. I joined this program and helped create the ultimate Kromagg virus.

REMBRANDT
Virus? We've tried getting our hands on those a couple times.

LOGAN
This one is perfect. A few months ago, we began sending "runners", who would slide from world to world, spreading the virus. We've taken away over forty worlds from the Kromaggs. And that's just from this lab. There are probably over fifty of them all over the multiverse. The Kromaggs are scared. They're retreating all over the place. They have lessened their attacks, too. When they attack, they do it in groups of three to ten.

Arturo, Quinn, Rembrandt, and Wade had a simultaneous epiphany.

REMBRANDT
So that's why they only sent that small group to Quinn's world.

Arturo was about to speak, but he was interrupted.

LAZE
And the force at my lab.

ARTURO
Laze!

LOGAN
Yes. Two months ago, Dr. Laze came by, and he's joined our family here.

Laze wondered what had happened to Quinn. This had to be the same group that he had trapped because Arturo knew him by name. He let it go. There were more important things to do.

LAZE
Mr. Mallory, we need your help.

LOGAN
Yes, Quinn. We need you to help us.

Quinn looked worried. He didn't know what they wanted, but they clearly weren't going to let him go until they got it from him.
